Life In Limbo - Eritrean refugees stuck in the search for a better life
The story started when I traveled to the remote areas of Ethiopia in search of a few small unofficial refugee camps I had located on Google Earth. After days hard travel, I found the camps but was unable to get permission to go inside. After repeated failures, I headed back toward the capital.
That is when fate stepped in.
The beer truck I hitched a ride in broke down late at night… right outside of Ada Harish… an Eritrean Refugee camp. In what may be the only hotel in town, I was greeted in English by a young man named Gabi. He soon invited me to have a beer as he and his friends celebrated an unusual union – the wedding of a young Ethiopian man and a young Eritrean refugee. After the celebration, Gabi made a fateful decision. He offered to take me into his refugee camp.
